A Resource for the Hearing Impaired The Centre is fortunate to be resourced for children with a hearing impairment. This means that the Meadows nursery (3 - 5 years) has acoustic treatment to all ceilings, which together with blinds and carpets, deadens sound, helping everyone to hear more clearly. The Centre also benefits from the expertise of a teacher of the deaf. Staff have knowledge of Makaton signing and members of staff have qualifications in British Sign Language. Pictures and symbols are used to help children find and return resources and understand the routines of the day. This supports early reading for all children.
Hearing impaired children from the Wokingham Borough area may be admitted to the Centre at a time most appropriate for them. These children will usually have a statement of special educational needs. This will often require the support of a teaching assistant and some time with a teacher of the deaf. Hearing impaired children work with their peers to access the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, modified where necessary to meet their needs.
