Children need to be fit and well to cope with a nursery session. Staff are unable to welcome children into the setting if there is evidence that the child is unwell.

If your child has sickness or diarrhoea, they must be clear for 48 hours before returning. A child who is on medication should not be in the Centre (except for long term medical conditions).

Children taking a course of antibiotics may return to nursery 48 hours after their first dose has been taken, provided they are fit and well. This is at the discretion of the staff.

ANY MEDICATION MUST BE HANDED TO STAFF. MEDICATION MUST NOT BE LEFT WHERE CHILDREN CAN ACCESS IT.

Can the Centre's staff administer medicine?

The staff can administer prescribed medicines in certain circumstances. Please discuss with your Keyworker.

Under what medical circumstances will my child be excluded from the nursery?

Health Protection Agency exclusion guidelines are displayed on the parent/carer notice board. Staff will contact you for advice if your child seems unwell. You will be asked to collect your child if (s)he is unable to cope with the nursery day and/or shows symptoms of an infectious illness.

What happens if my child gets a temperature while at nursery?

Staff are prepared to administer 1 (one) dose of temperature controlling medication with parental permission.
  • It is essential that staff are aware of any medication that children have had at home, this includes pain/temperature control medication.
  • Staff will administer 1 dose of medication when the child has a high temperature.
  • Before medication is given, staff will attempt to contact parent/guardian for permission. However, if this is unsuccessful and written permission is held at the nursery, the medication will be administered.
  • A written record of all medication administered is kept and parents are asked to sign this on collection.
  • If the termperature does not reduce within 30 minutes of medication being administered or the high temperature reappears, staff will request that you collect your child.
  • Staff will request that you collect your child if he/she appears to be unwell or is not coping with the nursery day.
  • Staff will administer the temperature control medication only if the child has had no more than one dose at home.
  • If this means that the child has had more than one dose in the last 12 hours, we consider the child to be supported by the medication and would request you to collect your child from nursery.

What happens if my child becomes unwell whilst in the nursery?

A member of staff will call to discuss the matter with you. She may ask you to collect your child from the nursery if your child is not able to cope with the nursery day and/or shows signs of an illness recommended for exclusion by the Health Protection Agency. (Details displayed on parent/carer notice board.)

What happens if my child is injured at the Centre?

The staff will treat any minor injury. You will be informed at the end of the session and be asked to sign the accident book. Clearly, if the accident is more serious or if your child is taken ill during the session, you will be contacted immediately. It is for this reason that we must have an up-to-date emergency contact number for either you or a responsible adult at all times. In an emergency, should we be unable to contact you or any of your emergency contacts, we will take appropriate action.

What happens if my child has an accident at home?

Please let your keyworker know if your child has any significant bruises/cuts etc but is fit to be at the Centre. (In order that we do not become concerned that an injury occurred at the Centre that we were unaware of.)
