When and how do I begin to toilet my child?

The Pastures routine promotes independence.

Through their early years, nappy changing has been an interactive, learning and engaging experience. Staff will give encouragement and support as necessary and in line with the ethos of the setting to promote continued independence in toileting.

Parents and keyworker should liaise regarding any signs of readiness to toilet train eg interest in toilet/potty, periods of dry nappy, dislike/removal of nappy, awareness of 'producing' wet/soiled nappy.

The keyworker will closely support child/parent and offer continued liaison during the process. Children need to be dressed in pants and loose, easy to manage clothing.

We advise that parents spend a day or two, perhaps at the weekend, beginning the process.

In the early days staff will remind the child to go to the toilet if needed, however the routine and interactions with peers will prompt.

Staff need to be supplied with a number of complete changes of clothes to ensure they can deal with any little 'accidents' as quickly as possible ie underwear, trousers, socks and shoes.
